Autumn is here

Its that time of year again in England, falling leaves, lots and lots of new pictures coming onto the site and of course our resident Lancashire-based Sue Bristow is leading the way with some fantastic shots of Hurst Green and the beautiful Ribble Valley.

Can't disagree with that Michael! And I think it was here in the forum somewhere that somebody said the leaves are at their best as they are dying, true isn't it?

Our fall colour pallette shifted a bit when we moved just out of town this summer. Our old house was surrounded by sugar maples, which turn a blazing orange-red in October (it almost hurts your eyes!). Our current house is in a forest full of mainly poplars and white oaks interspersed with many white pines, so the autumn colours are more bright yellow and rust interspersed with the intense green of the pines. Makes for a nice contrast, but I do miss the shock of the sugar maple colouring that enveloped our old house every October.

I love the fall! The colors are amazing!!! Even on a grey rainy day, the colors still pop! And the sunrises and sunsets are beautiful! It's kinda like one last hurrah before the cold, stillness of winter!

Autumn is my favorite season!  Love the changing colors, the crisp air, the smell of firewood burning (and if you're in the southwest, the delicious aroma of chiles roasting!).  As my commuter bus passed over the Potomac one morning this week, I looked back across the river at the city of Rosslyn, Virginia (which has a lovely skyline) and noticed the trees visible between Rosslyn and the Pentagon made me think of multi-colored heather.  The colors of the leaves were definitely turning from green but were soft and subdued.  Quite lovely.

We done lost all our leaves in last weeks blizzard.......gggrrrrr

Barbara, what can you tell me about Alexandria, Virginia? If I end up moving I am thinking of going there. Email me if you have any opinions.
