Hi Folks, a long standing wish is to capture a shot or two of kingfishers one day in the future. As we all know they are really elusive , I have only ever seen the blue flash and then only once. Has any of you any hints and tips for such a time as I might get a chance to capture one of these little fellows. I know they are sometimes at Warnham Nature Reserve ( but never when I get to go there ). Another thing I have picked up on is one is not supposed to photograph Kingfishers without a Schedule 1 permit from Natural England but is this needed when taking photos from a hide in recognised reserves like Warnham or say RSPB establishments? I have seen stunning shots around in magazines , on the web and indeed here on POE, just fancy having a try myself. Any ideads hints or tips ? Thank you good people.

I can't offer any advice on this at all Vince, but the best of luck, I do hope you manage to get the shots, they are magnificent birds and I look forward to seeing your pictures - fingers crossed then Smile

Schedule 1 is confirmed  http://www.wildlifelens.co.uk/kingfisher-photography

Although I can't see this being upheld if you are just out for a walk and very lucky  to see one. I expect it is for more specifically set up projects

I would contact any reserve you intend to try first to get the latest info

I have only ever seen 3 that I can remember

I've seen a few round here, we get them in the woods surrounding the reservoirs. I say a few, that's over a 23 year period.

Errrr, NO !!!

You may find that any special reserve may issue a day licence or something similar but at least they would see you in the right which would cut the odds a bit..

You've probably read this already Vince, but just in case you haven't here's the RSPB info on Kingfishers.
