 Hi Peggy, as far as I am aware a gunwale or also a gunnel is the upper edge of the side of a boat/ vessel. So named as that was often the place the gun would have been mounted.  Hope that helps-- HOPE I got the meaning right, I am not a nautical type, heck don't like water !!

Cathyml  is it something to do with the bridge but I don't know the names of the structure and the battery is out of my encyclopedia at the moment so cannot check it ???

Not the bridge Peggy (originally I thought I would perhaps do Girders! but decided there was a more fun one and much more obvious)!  Or so I thought!!!

 It is the boat Peggy! - Sabrina - Goddess of the river and it''s written on the awning on the side of the cruise boat!
