Well done POE. At least you have proof that you saw a Great spotted woodpecker in your garden.

My guess is that now you have seen it once you will find that it is a regular visitor. Regards Roy J.

Thanks Roy. I hope you're right that now that i have seen one again, I should hopefully see it more often, cause it was great to see one again after all this time.
I think that you are right that it is probably a regular visitor to our garden, but ive just never seen it. I look at that feeder many many times a day to see whats on it, but i've never ever seen one on there, and being such a distinctive bird, and having such a fond memory of it from past times, i know i would have instantly recognised one had i layed eyes on it. That's what made today so unusual.

The bird feeder has only been on that tree for a year or so, it was much closer to the house before, and i think that may have been a contributing factor as to why we'd never seen one on it before. We've seen plenty of Green ones on the lawn, but never the great spotted. Anyway, fingers crossed we'll see more of them this summer Smile

I don't see the picture of the Great Spotted Woodpecker in latest picture or Wheatley, I was hoping to click on it to make it larger.

It is very unusual to see one on the ground, it's usually the Green Woodpeckers that you see ground feeding or anting.

I meant to say the picture of the Woodpecker on the ground, as I see the one of it feeding.

You are right Roy, your saying that about rare birds drew them to my yard. Could you say a few more things please, like I will get a shot of a Barn Owl or Great-horned Owl or something of the sort   .

Silly me! It was Roy's picture, and I could have clicked on it right here in the forum.

Thanks for your patience with me POE. Let's put it down to being excited by the Bittern OK, before Ron jumps in and makes some cutting remark about me
