Exactly Sue, it's a real disgrace the way the world is being destroyed by the minority. No matter who you speak to the majority share the same opinion, can't say this or that now for fear of being taken to Court, especially in England! These people must lay awake at night dreaming up the next stupid idea! I say HRH Prince Harry is innocent of all charges!!

Having grown up in West Yorkshire where there is a large Pakistani population and having heard the term Paki being used in an insulting and derogatory fashion most of my life I personaly woud never call a person of Pakistani decent a Paki . It is generally regarded as an insult .

Well that's just another example Ruth isn't it? (Nice new avatar btw) so why doesn't every 'Yank' rare up and start proceedings because to us 'Brits' here, Americans are generally known as 'Yanks' but there is no offence intended. Therefore, why, as Sue suggests, should the term 'Paki' upset anybody from Pakistan?

I actually don't like being called a Brit, but I certainly don't get my knickers in a twist when someone calls me that. I guess it's because they are not using it in a derogatory manner, whereas, like Mick said above, Paki has become a derogatory term over the years.

Hi Ron:  The reason Miya would take offense is that people from the southern states in the US refer to people from the northern states as Yankees.  People from the south DO NOT like to be called Yankees, nor do people from Texas.  The history goes back to the civil war, when the northerners were called Yankees, and the southerners were called Rebels.

Whether a word is offensive really relates to the cultural context and how it's used.  The offensive word for people of African descent in the US has mostly always been used in a deragatory and hateful way.  I had never heard the word "Paki" but if it's meant in a deragotory way, then it's not good, even though to someone like me, it just looks like a shortened version of "Pakistani."  I don't take offense to "Yank" when someone means "a person from the USA" but it can also have a deragatory context.
