Is Monday a holiday in the U.S.? It seems people are talking about not having their kids in school on Monday and now Diana says goodbye until Tuesday.

My sons got school, so no holiday here.

Cheerio friends above. I'm still here for a while.

My girls were out Thurs. and Fri but have school on Monday although Erin's daycare which she attends in the morning and afternoon (public school kindergarden is barely half day) is closed!! So I have to take the day off so I can get her to public school!  Confusing, right?

Yes, Sue, Columbus Day.  It always used to be on Oct. 12 then they moved it to the 2nd Monday in Oct.  Some states observe it, others don't.  For the benefit of those who don't know, it's to celebrate the "discovery" of America by Christopher Columbus in 1492.  It's become somewhat controversial in the last several years.  Italian American groups love it because Columbus was from Italy although he was sailing under the patronage of Queen Isabela of Spain at the time of the discovery.  Native American tribes don't see it as anything to celebrate.  It's also most probable that the Vikings were probably the first Europeans to land in N. America, probably in the 8th or 9th century, about the same time they were raiding Britain.   But of course, we all know that it was St. Brendan and his little band of Irish monks who actually made it here in the 6th century.  LOL.

I'm off work on Monday, a paid holiday for me.  Yippeeee!!!

Ah, I remember now. Our schools don't get Columbus day off because they get Nevada Day off instead which is October 31st.

Thanks for the info Ruth.
