There's another word we don't use here Maria......mom....can anyone tell me why its used in the USA and it appears Italy too lol We say mum....short for mummy or mother, whats mom short for?

Mom is short for Mommy, m'am (Lyn).  To us "mummy" is an inhabitant of a tomb in Egypt.

We use mam here as well Peter, I think it's a northern thing.

Some of the old school use mam in Yorkshire Karen, although it differs from town to town strangely. Bairn is another word that seems to be used in some areas of Yorkshire,but not all

I find Worcester has varying degrees of accent....real Worcester folk say 'mam'....me, I always said 'Mom' but when writing it down wrote 'mum'.Undecided
