Hi Paul:  Hope this finds you well.  Missed you the last few days.

Why are they called bank holidays?

Thanks Ruth; have been working but earwigging on the side, so to speak from my CB days.  Bank Holidays were when the Bank Of England celebrated various holidays which stopped people trading on those days. The Bank Holiday Act of 1871 made some of them statutory and I think it was the Bank and Financial Dealings Act of 1971 they were last amended when New Years Day finally was made a Bank Holiday.

It has no connection with what Bank Holiday means in the US. Hope you've been keeping well too, Ruth. Smile

Well, the banks are closed on holidays here, Paul.  But our holidays are not connected to Bank and Financial Dealings.  Funny how the meaning of a word will change ever so slightly as language migrates.  Somehow it seems that the words holiday and vacation are tied to being away from work.

LOL at Wolf too. Ruth---i think holiday comes from  Holy Day as a period off work which America translasted into  vacation---which possibly comes from vacating---like your place of work?  Only a guess on vacations origins.
