About Lathkill Dale

This is one of the Peak Districts hidden gems, not only is the scenery highly picturesque but the region is full of interesting geological features, with the upper part being a National Nature Reserve.

Although often bereft of people, this is an easily accessible dale with an array of fascinating limestone cliffs and dense forestry. Lathkill Dale meets with Cales Dale, both are surrounded by a vast agricultural landscape, its patchwork of fields flooded with sleepy cattle and sheep. The dale is crossed by the Lathkill River which in summertime is known to disappear below ground. Autumn and winter bring a different perspective, for then the river changes to become a spectacular raging torrent.

This is idyllic walking country, amongst the beauty you can often discover relics of former mines. For the experienced walker there are several other beautiful dales that it is worth taking time to explore - these include, Dovedale, Darley Dale and Monsal Dale.

Delightful Bakewell, the River Wye and the Derwent are all easily accessible from Cales Dale and Lathkill Dale.
