English Castles

View across Ludgershall Castle, Wiltshire

The 12th Century Castle used primarily as a Royal Hunting Lodge, but it did take an active part in the 12th Century English civil war (Empress Maud sheltered at Ludgershall in 1141). The castle passed out of royal ownership and had collapsed by 1547.
