Ancient England![]() Submitted by Paul Hilton(4th October 2008)Newbury, Berkshire The Elizabethan mansion of Shaw House was built in 1581 by Newbury clothier Thomas Dolman. During the Civil War in 1644, the Royalists resolutely held Shaw House, and nearby Donnigton Castle, from the 17,000+ forces of the Paliamentarians and their cavalry commanded by Oliver Cromwell.
