About Keighley
This is an industrial town in West Yorkshire. It lies in a fold between the fine countryside of Airdale and Keighley Moors. The town is best known as the terminus of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, a heritage steam line which has been lovingly restored and runs through the heart of Bronte country, visiting en-route some of Yorkshire's prettiest villages.
The town has wide streets with some impressive architecture, old mingles harmoniously with new. Of particular note is Keighley's handsome war memorial which stands at the centre of a quiet, flower filled square, flanked by shops and commercial buildings.
Keighley's history is richly portrayed in the Cliffe Castle Museum, a magnificent Victorian mansion which has reconstructed craftsman's workshops, as well as natural and geology displays and magnificent stained glass brought from East Riddlesden Hall together with pieces from the William Morris workshops, and church glass. Cliffe Castle was built by Keighley lawyer, Christopher Netherwood, it was completed in 1833. It was later purchased by Henry Isaac Butterfield, a wealthy textile merchant, who extended the grounds from 20 to 300 acres. The rooms of the house contain much intricate decoration and fine French furniture. In the grounds there are Aviaries, a conservatory, children's play area, a shop and a cafe.
Other attractions include the Keighley Bus Museum and the nearby East Riddlesden Hall, a merchants house of the 17th century.
In the town there are plenty of attractive shops to explore, welcoming pubs and inns, and for those wishing to stay to explore the lush countryside of the Yorkshire Dales, there is an excellent choice of accommodation.
Outside of the town, around 6 miles south of Keighley you will find Penistone Hill Country Park, and Leeshaw Reservoir. Both occupy a fabulous landscape with far reaching views, idyllic places to walk and picnic spots.
