About Golcar
Sturdily built of stone, this small hill town is perched north of the River Colne and the now restored Huddersfield Narrow Canal. The canal, built in 1794, left abandoned and derelict for decades, now presents fine opportunities for river pleasures and has a visitors centre. This little weaving town thrived as a place of cottage industry in the days before steam took over and put the cottagers out of business. There is now a museum in a terrace of weavers cottages, showing the Spinning Jenny, invented by James Hargreaves, and hand looms and living rooms where wool was once spun. There is a splendid parish church and many attractive old stone houses and cottages to be seen.
Golcar is a short distance from Hudderfield and a few miles from the magnificent countryside of the Peak District National Park.
