About Cissbury Ring

This is an ancient Iron Age Hill-Fort lying between Worthing and Findon, it is thought to have been occupied between the 5th century BC and the middle of the 1st century BC.

A number of mine shafts have been discovered in the area and it is likely that mining probably began in those early times, maybe even before. The site is later believed to have been occupied by the Romans, this is substantiated by the finding of a Romano-British circular shrine and relics belonging to the periods between the 1st and 3rd century, such as pottery and rough tools.

Cissbury Ring is one of the largest and most impressive of its kind in Britain, it has mile long double ramparts enclosing some 65 acres, the ramparts are believed to hold an estimated 60,000 tons of chalk rubble, when these were originally built it is likely they were faced with timber stakes.

From this impressive site there are stunning coastal views, taking in Beachy Head in the east and across the Solent you can just make out the fringes of the Isle of Wight.
