About Coventry Cathedral

The stunning modern cathedral designed by Sir Basil Spence replaces Coventry's cathedral of the 14th and 15th-centuries. The original cathedral was the parish church of St. Michael until 1918, it was a magnificent example of Gothic Church architecture of which following the bombing of 1940 very little remains save for fragments of walls and the ancient spire.

The new cathedral is joined to the relic of the old by a canopied porch, it was completed in 1962 and a massive west screen of clear glass enables visitors to see the old cathedral from inside the new - this, for many is a moving and evocative experience. The building is quite simple in design, with its main features being two free standing circular chapels, of Unity and Christ the Servant. There is a slender spire which was lowered by helicopter on to the roof.

One of the beauties of Coventry cathedral lies in Graham Sutherland's alter tapestry of "Christ in Glory" also of interest is the large group of St.Michael and the Devil by Epstein.

For visitors to Coventry the cathedral is a "must see" it offers the opportunity to experience fine 20th-century church architecture combined with a powerful vision of what the old cathedral must have looked like following its completion in the 15th-century.
