About Warwick Church of St Mary
St Marys Church is believed to date back to pre norman times. Roger Earl of Warwick made it a collegiate church in 1123, giving it similiar status to a cathedral. The church was damaged in the great fire of Warwick in 1694, losing it's nave and tower, but Earl Roger's crypt survived along with many other parts of the medieval building. St Mary's Church has one of the finest medieval tombs in Britian; the tomb of Richard Beauchamp who died in 1439. Beauchamps effigy lies with hands raised towards the figure of Our Lady in the vaulted roof. There are other tombs of interest in the Church including the tomb of Ambrose Dudley, who was made Earl of Warwick by Queen Elizabeth I when the Beauchamp line died out. Also buried in the church is Ambrose's brther Robert, Earl of Leicester, next to his wife Lettice Knollys. She was the mother of the Noble Impe, the child who died in infancy and is also entombed in the Church Chapel.
Sir William Wilson, a local architect, built the nave and tower of St Mary's between 1698 and 1704. The tower is 174ft tall and is open to the public, offering fantastic views across warwick and the surrounding countryside.
