About Nuneaton
It was the arrival of the railways in 1847 that caused Nuneaton to develop as an industrial textile and engineering town. Prior to this event, the town had been largely dependant on it's coal industry which began in the 14th-century and continued right up until recent times.
In the 12th-century, a Priory was set up at the side of the River Anker by a rich order of Benedictine nuns. Some of the old walls of the priory have been built into the walls of the parish church of St.Mary, and the remainder of the priory ruins can be seen close to the church.
The town has an Arts centre, a cinema, good shopping facilities and plenty of local pubs and inns.
