About Woking
In the 17th-century the old part of Woking was a thriving market town with a lively population. More latterly, the town has become a commuter belt for those working in London. However, the town has lost none of its charm and still possesses some interesting buildings of yester-year while keeping up with the demands of 21st-century living.
Woking is an attractive leafy town with quiet lanes, waterways and a peaceful atmosphere. It has the very best of modern museums and visitor centres, and on its doorstep you can find a wealth of famous gardens, historic houses and theme parks, including Burpham Court Park which has rare breeds, a nature trail, fishing and a play area.
Interestingly, the town has the first Mosque to be built in Britain. It was built in 1899 and was financed largely by the Begum Shar Jehan, the immensely rich ruler of Bhopal State in India following her visit to Woking that year. Today, the Mosque is the spiritual focus of Woking's Muslim community.
The town was once the home of H.G.Wells, it formed the setting for his novel "The War of the Worlds" this is celebrated by "The Martian" an amazing piece of modern sculpture to be found in the town centre.
Brockwood Cemetery opened in 1854. It contains many souls who died during the two World Wars including Allied casualties. Here visitors can see a large number of graves and tombstones, some with carved statues atop.
On the east side of the Town Square visitors often stop to admire the Town Gates put up in 1992. These are very decorative, and keep alive memories of Woking's heritage of brick making, the canal and the railway, all of which have contributed towards making Woking the pleasant town we see today.
The town has other fascinating buildings including historic Norman churches, and a beautiful Convent building that is now converted to provide private accommodation. The houses in the town feature architecture from several periods.
Visitors wishing to explore the town will find excellent hotels, good inns, pubs and restaurants serving both English and Continental cuisine. It has excellent modern shopping facilities, good entertainment, exciting sporting facilities, and pleasing countryside where you can relax after enjoying all this fascinating place has to offer.
