In answer to your question Cathyml I am afraid I am not that knowledgable on wasps nests, only know the one I removed about 15/20 years ago looked very similar. Need to ask a pest controller/exterminater if you can find one.

I always thought this was a hornet nest. Was told some wasps build nests in ground.
