a Historic Market Town in the county of Surrey

Epsom Racecourse, Surrey

About Epsom

In the 18th-century, this delightful market town was known for the famous Salts which took their name from the town - Epsom Salts, prior to this the town had become noted as a Spa town and visitors have been flocking here since the 17th-century for the medicinal properties contained in the waters.

Epsom, is known world-wide for what is perhaps the most famous horse race of all time - The Derby. Interestingly, thie Derby was founded when a group of wealthy sporsmen gathered together during a country house weekend and first founded that other classic race - The Oaks, which first ran in 1779. The following year, building on the success of the Oaks, they introduced a second race, named after their host, Lord Derby and so the year 1780 saw the birth of what still remains the race all owners, trainers and jockey's strive to win. The Derby is annually attended by H.M. the Queen and royalty from all over Europe. Epsom Downs on Derby Day is a breathtaking sight as hundreds and thousands throng the course and the town takes on a carnival atmosphere.

This is a prosperous town, it sits on the edge of the Surrey countryside within easy reach of London. Historically, the town was first recorded in the Domesday Book from whence it grew and developed with the passing centuries. Today we see a pleasant town that has lovely buildings of note from several centuries, it also has delightful open spaces and flower bedecked parklands. The town has excellent shopping facilities, good restuarants, inns and public houses. It is a town that has a welcoming ambiance and is a joy to visit at any time of year, but most especially, on Derby Day.

There is a museum at nearby Ewell and other attractions include the National Trust property of Polesden Lacy, Claremont and Chessington World of Adventures.
