About Elstead
Elstead is a spacious village occupying a favoured position in the Surrey countryside on the River Wey. It has handsome properties and a lovely old church originally built around the 12th century by priests from Waverley Abbey. Within the church all is peaceful and serene, there is beautiful woodwork and stained glass together with church treasures from its ancient past. Outside, in a picturesque grassed churchyard dotted with trees, some over 160 years old, there are the graves of centuries watched over by the church's short weatherboarded and tiled tower.
Some of the scattered houses go back to the 17th century and possibly beyond. The forge on the green dates 1686, it has been operated by a number of Blacksmiths, one who lived in the house next door and worked the forge for over 50 years.
The Woolpack Inn probably dates back to the 18th century, it can be found close to the village green. This is an atmospheric welcoming pub serving real ales and good food.
Elstead is a lovely place to visit, it has a tranquil atmosphere and offers a leisurely time with quite walks along the picturesque banks of the River Wey.
