About Farleigh Hungerford
This quiet sedate village is best known for the ancient ruins of Farleigh Hungerford Castle which lies at the top of a fine Somerset fertile green valley.
The castle has a dark history, it was once the home of the powerful Hungerford family, a member of which was put to death by execution during the 16th century for crimes of "treason and unnatural vice" but today, the ruined castle possesses a more peaceful atmosphere and gives visitors good views over lovely countryside.
Two interesting churches can be seen here, one is the ancient church within the curtain walls of the castle - this was taken by the Hungerford's when they extended their castle territory and the other is the village church, believed to have been built at a later date by Sir Walter Hungerford.
In high summer the village becomes thronged with revellers who flock here for castle re-enactments.
Farleigh Hungerford lies between Norton St.Philip and Wingfield, with the nearest large town being the market town of Trowbridge.
