About Burrow Bridge
This attractive village developed along the waters of the rivers Tone and Parrett, it lies in an area known as The Somerset Levels and is famous for a local beauty spot called The Barrow Mump. In rising mist the Mump, topped by the ruins of a church presents an eyrie sight as it sits casting a watchful eye over the village. This is now the property of the National Trust, but it is thought the church may have been used as a refuge during the English Civil War. There have been a couple of attempts at restoration, however during the 18th century the final analysis was that the building should be left as an interesting "folly ruin" for the pleasure of the nation. Visitors making the walk to the top are rewarded with spectacular views of Burrow Bridge village and undulating Somerset countryside.
Visitors will note the village's attractive buildings, amongst these is the noted King Alfred Inn a Grade II listed building. The inn was first recorded as the Anchor in 1710, it shows restoration from 1806 and roof alterations from the early part of the 20th century. The inn can be found at the side of the river close to an old toll bridge spanning the waters of the Parrett. Of interest too, is the Ebenezer Chapel, a russet brick building from 1856.
In this old part of Somerset there is a wealth of little villages that have stood silent witness to centuries of history, this can be seen in churches found off the beaten track, in old farmsteads, mills and at ancient Glastonbury with its rising Tor and Arthurian legends. It is an area offering much of interest and you could do no better than start your investigations in the pretty village of Burrow Bridge.
