About Carding Mill Valley & Long Mynd

The bleak, heather clad Long Mynd lies to the west Of Church Stretton. It is a long lonely stretch covering some 10 miles in length and between 2 and 4 miles wide in parts. It ascends to a height of 1,700 feet and for those who abandon their cars to take the walk to the top there are rich rewards of magnificent views over moorland where red grouse roam amongst the heather, waterfalls cascade into secretive valley's and icy springs spurt forth from bog moss and bracken covered hillsides.

Much of the Long Mynd belongs to the National Trust, parts of the grouse moors are leased out and commoners have the right to graze their sheep and ponies on the land.

The beautiful Carding Mill Valley forms part of this lovely landscape, it thrusts deep into The Long Mynd and at its head is the Light Spout waterfall. From the top of the valley there are breathtaking views of the Stripperstones, Jonathon's Hollow and extensive views towards the Caer Caradoc.

This whole region is blest with an abundance of wild flowers, heather, gorse, sundew and bilberries. There are many butterflies, and birds include the grey wagtail, ravens and buzzards.

In the area there is a National Trust Tea-Room which is open from April to the end of October. Further to this the trust arranges a programme of events for walkers exploring both the Cardingdale Valley and The Long Mynd.

This is a wonderful place for a peaceful walking holiday, there is lovely woodland close to Church Stretton, which itself makes an ideal place for anyone to stay whilst exploring this, one of the loveliest parts of the English countryside.
