About Ashmolean Museum
Built in 1845 as the university Galleries, this Museum became home to the Ashmolean collection in 1894. The museums present collection of art and antiquities is based on a 17th century collection made by John Tradescant, the royal gardener who aquired his collection while travelling Europe in search of plants. The collection was passed to Elias Ashmole who donated it to the University of Oxford in 1683. One of the museum's most treasured posessions is the Alfred Jewel which is made of gold, enamel and rock crystal for the Anglo Saxon king.
