Description

Tomb of Alice de la Pole in St. Mary's Church, Ewelme

Alice Chaucer was the grand-daughter of Geoffrey Chaucer and also a powerful and wealthy woman in her own right. She was the benefactor of the Church, School and Almshouses at Ewelme. She died in 1475, and the magnificent tomb seen here is inside St Mary's Church. She was a Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. The tomb is noteworthy in having a cadaver effigy of the deceased in the lower part of the tomb (see my other pictures of Ewelme).
