About Blanchland

Blanchland is a small picturesque village nestled beside the river in the Derwent Valley within the North Pennines Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is surrounded by woodlands and open moors, and is also located near the picturesque Derwent Reservoir.

The village is mostly built from the remaining stone of the 12th-century Blanchland Abbey which was dissolved in 1539.

The local inn 'The Lord Crewe Arms Hotel' in Blanchland is one of the oldest hostelries in England, dating back to 1165. It was here that in 1715 that the Jacobite Rebellion leader General Tom Foster hid behind the inn's great fireplace. It is reputed that the hotel is haunted by the ghost of his sister!

Interesting & Historical Facts about Blanchland

Legend has it, that during the Anglo-Scots wars, Scottish raiders were in the area of Blanchland Abbey, Northumberland, and so the monks of the abbey decided to pray that the abbey would be spared. After doing so a thick mist soon descended on the valley, hiding the monastry from the Scottish raiding party.
