Our most famous guests were William Wordsworth, accompanied by his sister Dorothy, who stayed in 1802 and 'James Herriot', better known in Thirsk as Alf Wight. Alf wrote about his life as a country vet in books such as 'All Creatures Great and Small', and regularly came in for liquid inspiration. His old surgery is nearby and is now a visitors centre.

Formerly known as the Horse and Jockey in the 1700's, it was a busy place next to the Race Course and Grandstand. Renamed in 1800 'The Railway Hotel and Posting House', it was a main stop off point for Posting Carriages, then having stables to house horses and accommodation for travellers. In 1901 it was transformed into what you see today and named The Station Hotel. The Main Bar was completely refurbished in November 1999 in the colours and design of the period and features an open fire place. The newly refurbished Lounge/bistro Bar is a smaller meeting place and is non-smoking. An attractive function room is situated off the main hall.
