a Historic Market Town in the county of North Yorkshire

Pickering, North Yorkshire

About Pickering

The enduring popularity of the East Coast of North Yorkshire owes much to the excellent long sandy beaches, while the lure of the wild moorland and its communities never fades. Splendid views can be enjoyed from the steam trains of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, running 18 miles from Pickering to Grosmont. Pickering is the terminus for the railway and there are locomotive sheds and a viewing gallery at the station. As you can imagine, with the trains travelling through such magnificent countryside, this station is never anything less than busy!

Terraces of stout little cottages lead off the main street of this ancient market town, which, with its close proximity to the North Riding Forest Park and the Moors, is an ideal centre to tour from. The ruined walls and towers of the once fine Pickering Castle overlook one end of the town, they date mostly 14th-century. The local parish church has a fine collection of 15th-century wall paintings, for which it is justly famous. A visit to the Beck Isle Rural Life Museum is a must for here the visitor can learn much of local history and folklore.

Other nearby attractions are; Flamingo Land, Eden Camp at closeby Old Malton and Nunnington Hall, owned by the National Trust at Nunnington. Shopping facilities are good and so is the choice of quality inns and public houses. But perhaps, like many others before you, you will require nothing more than peace and solitude and time to explore the wilderness of the forest and the beauty of the endless rolling moorland.
