About Grassington
This is Upper Wharfdale's principle village. It is a place of quiet charm with a lovely old bridge spanning the River Wharfe and cobbled lanes with pretty stone cottages descending towards the attractive village square.
In the 18th and 19th century Grassington was a noted centre for lead mining and Grassington Moor, north of the village still bears the scars of this long vanished industry.
Grassington is an excellent base for exploring the Dales, there are shops as well as the National Park Dale Visitors Centre. It is a good area for walking as well as touring by motor car.
Tourist attractions include Grimworth Reservoir with its wildlife and lovely picnic spots, Kinsey Park and Trout Farm which as well as fly fishing lakes for enthusiasts, also has a children's fishing lake and playground. At nearby Hebden there are caverns and old lead workings, and the gardens of Parcevall Hall offer beautiful flowers, plants, trees, pools and streams. These dazzling gardens are set in 16 acres, there is a picnic area and tea-rooms, but the house, used as a retreat, is not available to the public.
