About Welney
Interestingly, in the icy winter's of the 19th and 20th-centuries, the village of Welney was a famous centre for Ice Skating, these days, with warmer climes, the ice is long since gone and wild life has taken over. For many decades now, Welney has been famous for it's Wild Fowl Refuge overlooking the Flood Planes of the Wash. This is the winter home of thousands of swans and ducks. The refuge is in the hands of the Wildlife and Wetlands Trust, who look after it with pride and care. Flood-lights have been thoughtfully provided for watchers to enjoy the dramatic sight of thousands of birds taking their evening meal!
In the midst of fascinating Fen countryside, close to the River Great Ouse and picturesque Downham Market, where Nelson went to school, Welney, is in an area of quiet charm and beauty. There are lovely old villages to explore as well as historic market towns. Welney Wildfowl Refuge is a thrilling place where experts and novices can appreciate seeing rare ducks and Whooper swan's raising families in a natural habitat.
With plenty of accommodation in the area, this is a pleasant place for a day out or a longer stay to explore all that the region has to offer including: Downham Market Windmill at Denver, Ouse Washes RSPB site, the River Great Ouse, Peckover House and Gardens at Wisbech.
