About West Kirby
Pleasant residential seaside resort set in a sheltered spot on the Dee estuary. It is one of the oldest settlements in the Wirral peninsula, and was granted a charter by William the Conqueror, although its history appears to pre-date this period.
The town lies between Heswall and Hoylake, it has a nice sandy beach, a beautiful marine lake and some lovely preserved Victorian properties. To the east lie the Grange and Caldy Hills, and a mile or so off coast lies Hilbre Island which is now a nature reserve. Although the island is cut off by a rising tide, it is possible to walk there when the tide recedes. Adjoining Thurlaston Common provides visitors with a pleasant place to picnic. Both Thurlaston and the Caldy Hills offer fine views across the Dee towards the distant Welsh hills.
Visitors will find good accommodation, plenty of shops, restaurants, inns and cafes. The town offers facilities for relaxation including several near-by golf courses. West Kirby offers excellent scope for sailing, it has its own flourishing sailing club. Sea fishing is available, as are enjoyable river trips.
