Childe Of Hale, Hale Village, Liverpool

Newly erected 3 metre bronze statue of the Childe Of Hale outside Hale Manor House. The Childe Of Hale, John Middleton was born here in 1578 and grew to be very tall. Legend has it that he was 9 feet 3 inches tall, but evidence taken from his bones and an impression of his hand indicate a height of 7 feet 9 inches. He was in any case a very tall man who worked at the nearby Speke Hall. He died in 1623. The statue has him looking towards his house, still standing a couple of hundred yards away. Picture taken 3.11 pm Thursday 16th May 2013.

Interesting information. I wonder if the "tall" gene was handed down to future generations? Why Childe of Hale?

Hi Cathy, probably the term Childe refers to John Middleton being a son or child of the village. I don't know if he had any issue.
