Mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 the area has been occupied over 1,500 years. The name Kirkby, common in the former Danelaw region of England, is derived from Old Scandanavian and Old English with kirkju (church) & by (village) and here translates literally as "village with a church on the green". Just beyond the Holy Cross church which stands on the site of a much older church which was torn down in 1848 the road crosses Scopwick Beck by way of this shallow ford.
