Originally a private house, the novelist George Eliot (real name Mary Ann Evans) stayed here when she visited Gainsborough in 1859. She witnessed an aegir (a tidal bore) on the nearby River Trent, which inspired her to write her novel 'The Mill On The Floss' (published in 1860). In her book, the fictional town of St. Oggs is based on Gainsborough.
