About Spalding

The marshland throughout the fens has been drained for little over a hundred years and it is the richness of this drained soil that allows gardeners and bulb growers to generate flowers of a rare quality and beauty.

In springtime, the town of Spalding, in it's favoured position on the banks of the River Welland becomes a riot of blazing colour as tulips, daffodils and other glorious spring flowers come into bloom. The town hosts an annual flower festival which attracts visitors from all over the country and Europe, it is a spectacular event that is well worth attending. Of great acclaim are the beautiful Springfield Gardens, a wonderland of lawns and water features that are nothing less than outstanding in the spring when over a million or so bulbs burst into bloom.

The town has several charming buildings of which the oldest is Ayscoughfee Hall, a beautiful 15th-century mansion restored in the 18th-century when it was the home of the founder of the Spalding Gentlemen's Society, Maurice Johnson. The White Horse Inn was once the home of a rich merchant family, the Willesby's - it is a building of stone and thatch and was then known as Burguery House. The church of St. Mary and St. Nicholas has a perpendicular hammerbeam roof decorated with angels. The church was built in 1284 and has additions from medieval times. There is a beautiful Victorian stained glass screen which dates around 1875.

There are charming streets to both sides of the River Welland as it passes through this picturesque town and here you will find good examples of properties from several periods. You will find quaint and interesting shops selling a range of goods from antiques to the evry day requirements of modern day living and, as you can imagine there are several stunning flower shops. Other places of interest include Spalding Tropical Forest.
