About Donna Nook
This place takes its name from a ship once wrecked on its desolate shore. When the tide recedes the sea disappears from view beyond the muddy flats and banks of sand.
The area was once known as an RAF bombing range, but now it is best known as a breeding ground for common and grey seals who breed far out on the flats. The seal colony here as been establishing itself since the 1970's, they seem unhindered by the noise and appear not to be bothered by the public interest. A lot of their time is spent at sea hunting, and unlike Wales were breeding starts in September, at Donna Nook breeding begins in November. This is a safe beach with the best survival rate for seal pups in the British Isles.
