About Barton upon Humber
This is a charming town spread out from the historic River Humber. There are particularly fine views of the Humber bridge, river traffic and river wildlife, with the best views being from the Barton Claypits which occupy a lengthy stretch of the river bank. These disused pits, now flooded offer sanctuary to wildlife, formerly they were the home of a prosperous brick and tile industry.
In the town visitors can see majestic churches, the timeless charm of medieval merchant houses, chapels and halls. These can all be enjoyed by picking up a leaflet from the local Tourist Information Centre, which describes walks allowing you to amble around in peace, soaking up the atmosphere, history and heritage of Barton. The walk traces the town's development from the Doomsday Book to the present day, with emphasis on medieval times when Barton flourished as a port. It further features its historic and recent industries which include rope making and cycle manufacture.
For anyone not wishing to walk there is a museum covering the town's local history in Georgian Baysgarth Park. The museum is housed in a magnificent house which was once the home of the influential Nelthorpe family. The park offers facilities and enjoyment for all the family.
Visitors to Barton will find plenty of entertainment, good shopping facilities, pleasant restaurants, cafe's and typical Lincolnshire inns. It is an ideal destination for anyone wishing to explore the famous Humber river and the peaceful countryside that surrounds it.
