About Turton

This is a large scattered village situated on the Bradshaw Brook valley. It is an old place with a history stretching back into the mist of time. The earliest records of Turton date from around 1200 when the Manor of Turton was part of the Barony of Manchester.

Turton is set in an idyllic rural landscape of rolling countryside and reservoirs. It is famous for the historic Church dedicated to St.Anne, and for Turton Tower, a fine Tudor house built around a 14th century pele tower fortified against the Scots. The tower was built by the Orrell family, and it was William Orrell who added the beautiful timber-frame house in the 1590's. Despite alterations during the Victorian period, the house has remained in a remarkable state of preservation, it currently acts a museum showing a delightful collection of armour, medals, Tudor and Victorian furniture, paintings and decorative woodwork. Turton Towers is set in the midst of a pretty garden on the edge of the West Pennine moors.

This whole region is eye catching, it has the famous Entwistle multi-arched viaduct, Medieval churches, ancient cotton mills, rows of lovely stone built mill workers cottages from the Victorian era, and within easy reach is Smithhills Hall, one of Lancashire's oldest manor houses, dating from the 14th century.

Turton today, offers visitors a peaceful time amongst waterways and wooded cloughs. It offers the opportunity to explore the area's wildlife as well as being able to see relics of a time long gone. There are enjoyable walks which can be followed by an equally enjoyable visit to a typical Lancashire pub where you can be sure of a hearty welcome, good ale, accompanied by delicious home made food.

The village is situated between Bolton and Ramsbottom, with both Bury and Rochdale being within easy driving distance.
