About Broadstairs

At almost every corner of this popular resort are reminders of the towns association with the famous novelist, Charles Dickens. Bleak House, named for his novel, was once his home. Bleak House, is to the north side of the town and it from here that Dickens wrote David Copperfield. Just across the bay is Dickens House which he immortalised in David Copperfield as the home of Betsey Trotwood. This house is now a museum and is open daily throughout the summer and in Dickens' day it belonged to a certain Miss Mary Strong who is thought to have been the model for Betsy Trotwood. Each year Broadstairs hosts a Dickens festival, this is a lively event and attractive event, when everyone dresses in Dickensian costume. Followers of Dickens come from all over to attend the week-long festival.

There is a delightful little harbour which is sheltered by a small pier, and swimming from the sandy beach is both safe and a pleasure. Of historic note is a Portcullis Arch built during the reign of Henry VIII, this is known as York Gate.

Shopping facilities in Broadstairs are excellent and there are several delightful inns and restaurants. It is a place that is truly a pleasure to visit at any time of year.
