Pictures of Yarmouth Castle
About Yarmouth Castle
This was the last great castle built as part of Henry VIII's fortifications against invasion of Britain by the French. Unfortunately, Henry's orders to build came too late, for the French invaded the Island in 1545, nonetheless the impressive castle served its purpose as part of Britain's defences with a garrison remaining in residence, ready to defend until 1885.
With the passage of time parts of the castle have disappeared, what remains is interesting for there was no central tower to the castle, it was built rectangular with a square battery to the front and an early arrow-head bastion on the exposed angle. The only other castle in the country similar to Yarmouth is Southsea Castle, built to defend Portsmouth in 1544.
Yarmouth Castle is open to the public on most days throughout the year.
