Town Hall, Newtown, Isle of Wight

About Newtown

This tranquil village is noted for it's fine Town Hall, built in the 18th-century. In the 14th-century this pleasant little place enjoyed 'port' status and was known as Francheville. It was destroyed by the French and later rebuilt as Newtown. The village lies at the head of the picturesque Newtown estuary and is surrounded almost entirely by a Nature Reserve owned by the National Trust.

Newtown Estuary is in an area of immense charm and beauty. It has some moorings for boats and is a popular destination for the yachting fraternity. There are excellent views across the Solent from the sandy beaches and coves fringing the river mouth. Waders, other wildfowl and Canadian Geese can be seen.
