About Freshwater Bay

Fascinating tourist destination of sheer rock faced cliffs that were once the haunt of Alfred, Lord Tennyson. In all weathers Tennyson would stride out, passing Arched Rock, formed from relentless seas of centuries, and then on to Tennyson Down which was named after him. From these cliffs there are awe-inspiring views over a seemingly endless ocean.

Undulating countryside surrounds this beautiful place - it is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty and as such attracts walkers and bird watchers as well as being a Mecca for surfers and yachtsmen. There is a pretty beach which offers safe bathing and for the energetic, there is a superb golf club.

The 'village' has retained its Victorian atmosphere with the preservation of many beautiful building built during the elegant Victorian era. There is an interesting 'Thatched' church built at the turn of the twentieth century through the generosity of the Tennyson family. Dimbola Lodge, was once the home of Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron - it is now preserved as a photographic museum.

Freshwater Bay makes an ideal base from which to explore this lovely island. It has immense appeal for every member of the family and offers opportunities for sun bathing, swimming, enjoying a variety of boat trips including deep sea fishing. The Tennyson Trail provides a spectacle of stunning sea vista's, whilst a short walk inland takes you to the nature trail at Afton Marsh.

There is plenty of excellent holiday accommodation, pleasant inns and restaurants and with so many tourist attractions, the visitor to Freshwater Bay is quite spoilt for choice.
