About Baldock

During the Ist-century BC a Roman Settlement existed here and there is evidence to support the theory that occupation continued throughout the whole of the Roman period. This fact reflects the long historic past this little place enjoys.

One of the most startling things about Baldock is it's lovely church. The Church of St.Mary is a spacious church, with a two-storey south porch and an early 14th-century tower, with an octagonal lantern and a small spire. Inside, all is peaceful and serene, showing a 13th-century octagonal font, 15th-century screens, brasses and impressive monuments, one of which is by E.H. Baily and dates 1846. The church lies in a prominent position at the centre of the town, it is very beautiful and well worth seeing.

The town lies close to the River Beane, in a spot where the river flows through some lovely water meadows and tranquil English countryside. Both in the town and to the fringes, there are attractive properties to be seen, some dating back to the 16th-century, a time when the Great North Road which forms part of Baldock's High Street, was not as busy as it is today.

A lively, bustling market town, with rapid links to many other surrounding towns and villages and with the advantage of having independent retailers and other facilities. There are good pubs, hotels and restaurants - most visitors tastes are well provided for. Within easy driving distance you will find wildfowl centres, an RSPB site and Duxford Imperial War Museum. Driving in an easterly direction you will find Mole Hall at Widdington and the great 17th-century mansion at Audley End.

Places to visit include: Buntingford, Bennington, St.Mary's Church, Audley End House, River Beane and Wildfowl Trusts.
