Palace Pound, Ross On Wye, Herefordshire, England (17.7 miles, 28.6 km, direction E)
Welcome to The Royal Hotel, the face of Ross-on-Wye and the gateway between Wales and England. The Royal is a majestic, beautiful hotel dating back to 1837. But in no way intimidating, a very friendly and warm welcome awaits you. Refurbishment work completed in December 2006 has given the building a new lease of life. We are now access-friendly into our restaurant and bar. Being a grade ll listed building has created a few problems extending this to our bedrooms, but we are working on it. The changes are fantastic, though in character. We are particularly enjoying the new ‘Riverview Bar’ and as the name suggests you can enjoy the magnificent views across the Wye Valley and river below Ross was one of the first market towns in England and is still known for its antique shops and Market Square.

We pride ourselves on the quality of our accommodation and friendly service and are pleased to welcome you throughout the year, but regretfully are unable to accommodate smokers and pets. In the days of Yore the Admiralty favoured the Forest of Dean by building many fine ships with its timbers. Admired for their strength and condition nourished from the Gloucestershire soil, the chosen trees were marked with the sign of Dean so they were not spoiled by Yeomen or Forest Folk. There are many well defined Forest Walks which pass through a variety of woodland, including samples of mature beech, oak and sweet chestnut, as well as some ancient holly trees. A variety of tracks through the forest pass areas untouched by man. In contrast there are railway and industrial workings which have long ago been abandoned and which nature had reclaimed. The forest is ever changing season to season and as such can be viewed and explored year round, many visitors choose to return seasonally to witness and experience this wonderful area.

Moccas Court in Hereford, England

Book the Moccas Court in Moccas, Hereford, Herefordshire, England

Moccas, Hereford, Herefordshire, England (9.6 miles, 15.4 km, direction N)
Brief description: Moccas Court is a Grade 1 listed Georgian Country house, widely thought of as Herefordshire's finest stately home. It's not a 'typical' hotel but a Country House with luxury standards and in a class of its own, but without Jacuzzis and spas. There is no restaurant, but dining instead around a communal table-with a fixed but considerately constructed menu of local produce- in an informal yet opulent atmosphere. Moccas Court offers exceptional quality of food and accommodation, providing the ideal setting for a really rewarding, relaxing and refreshing stay. Some more detail: The history and the setting are today matched by a warm welcome and a friendly atmosphere. The house itself might seem imposing at first, but stepping through the front door reveals an elegant family home of real intimacy and charm. Family portraits and beautiful furniture combine with tranquil vistas of some of the finest landscape in Britain, and grounds that were laid out by Capability Brown and Humphrey Repton. The accommodation consists of five generously-proportioned bedrooms, all decorated to the highest standard and provided with top-quality ensuite facilities. Furnishings are restrained, echoing the period and style of the house. The rooms all have extraordinary views over the grounds and the beautiful countryside surrounding the Court. Guests have the exclusive use of a private sitting room overlooking the gardens. They are also welcome to use the library and the other principal rooms of the house. Pre-dinner drinks will be offered by the owners, Ben and Mimi Chester-Master, in the elegant Library. Dinner itself will be served in the Round Room, designed by Robert Adam with its exquisite hand-painted wallpaper, lit by soft candlelight. The cuisine at Moccas emphasises quality, reflects the seasons, and is executed in a classical but unpretentious style; home- grown vegetables, local venison and game, lamb and beef, and when available wild sea trout or salmon. Where possible, menus result from prior interaction with guests and their tastes. Situated as it is in an area of extraordinary natural beauty, and so close to the Brecon Beacons National Park, guests will never be short of things to do. Equally, Moccas is a great place to relax and unwind for those that are feeling less energetic. Nowhere is more conducive to a rewarding stay and a good night's sleep.
