About Ripley
One could be forgiven for thinking that this Yorkshire village has a faintly French air for Ripley was indeed remodelled in 1827 along the lines of a typical French village of Alsace Lorraine. This was done by desire of the then Lord of the Manor, Sir William Amcotts Ingilby.
The majority of the houses here are terraced and in spite of the french influence still to be seen, the true Yorkshire character prevails amonst greystone houses and cobbled streets. Here you will find a charming cobbled square, village stocks and a market cross.
The home of the Ingilby family, a magnificent part 16th century castle is open to the public and of its attractions are a secret hiding place and lavishly decorated rooms. The gardens of this illustrious estate are attributed to Capability Brown and the beautiful grounds overlook lakes and the Thornton valley.
There are strong reminders of Cromwells visit to Ripley. The walls of the 14th century parish church still bears the marks of the bullet holes made when Roundheads executed Ripley men following the fighting at Marston Moor.
It is not just this grim chapter in the history of Riply that makes the village worthy of a visit but the prettiness of the countryside and the friendliness of the locals make Riply a very beguiling place indeed.
