Portchester castle, near Portsmouth

This Roman fort is apparently the best preserved example in Europe. In the Napoleonic war it served as a prison and has been the subject of at least one major archeological dig, I think in the early seventies. It commands a fabulous view across to Portsmouth harbour, sitting strategically on a peninsula.
