About Beaulieu
This lovely village is set in the lush greenery of the New Forest where a pretty village street leads to the banks of the Beaulieu River at the point at which it opens up as an estuary. Just across the river is the original gate-house to the abbey, Palace House.
A Cistercian abbey was founded here in the year 1204. To-day, Beaulieu Abbey is mostly a beautiful romantic ruin but the old refectory serves as the village church. The church has a beautiful new pulpit which rests on the heavily decorated 13th-century base of the original pulpit. Other buildings to be seen include the Domus building.
Beaulieu, is the home of the Montagu Motor Museum, founded by Lord Montagu in 1952 in memory of his father the 2nd Lord Montagu. The museum attracts thousands of visitors each year who come to see the rare and unique vehicles on display.
The hauntingly beautiful ruins of the Abbey are well documented, so to is Beaulieu and it's famous motor museum. It is a lively and interesting area that is well worth a visit.
