About Twickenham
I wonder what the earlier supporters of Rugby Union who attended Twickenham when the pitch was first purchased in 1907, would think of the hallowed place it has become today. Twickenham is celebrated as a mecca for all supporters of the great game, it the setting for all the great international matches and fans attend from all over Europe and beyond. Apart from the Rugby ground, the other great asset of Twickenham is it's assembly of fine properties from several periods. In Syon Row and Montpelier there are attractive Georgian houses and at the end of Montpelier is South End House, where the great poet Walter de la Mere died in 1956.
The parish church of St.Mary dates from 1713 and was designed by John James. This fascinating church houses many treasures including several interesting monuments, and the grave of Alexander Pope. All Hallows church was built in 1940 and incorporates relics from the demolished City church of 1694, these include intricate woodcarvings, an organ dating 1708 and a board bearing the Royal Arms. An orignal Tower designed by Wren is also incorporated in the church, it was moved to Twickenham from London. Horace Walpole (1717-1797) writer and MP, 4th son of Sir Robert Walpole settled here in 1747 when he purchased Strawberry Hill. He enlarged and extended his home so much until what had been an enchanting little cottage had become almost a Gothic castle. Here, Horace Walpole set up a printing press and his house became a fashionable centre for learning. Other fine properties include 18th-century Marble Hill and the attractive 17th-century York House.
