About Thaxted
The village of Thaxted is stunningly beautiful with many reminders that it was once and perhaps always has been an extremely prosperous place. This is borne out by the sheer magnificence and style of it's 15th-century church for this is a house of worship that in those far off day's would have cost a great deal of money.
Thaxted is a very English village of ancient winding lanes and wide manicured grassed areas around which are interspersed a mixture of cottages and houses. Of great interest in Thaxted is a pretty row of beautifully preserved old Almshouses which stand in close proximity to the church. The cottages to the one side have short chimney's peering from thatched roofs, whilst the matching row is attractively adorned with exquistely carved 'barge-boarding' and leaded windows, it's chimney's too, are of brick but are of a slightly taller variety. Within this enchanting complex is a tower windmill that dates from 1805. The timbered Guildhall is of 16th-century but the lock-up incorporated is reputed to date from much earlier times.
Favoured by being surrounded by several charming hamlets and villages, Thaxted has immense appeal and this whole area is well worth a visit. There is a museum at nearby Finchingfield and Mole Hall is close to Widdington. This is an excellent area for browsing around antique shops and there is a plentiful supply of pleasant inns and restaurants.
